How to meet someone from a gay dating app safely

Most first meets go well, and a little planning makes them even better. This checklist covers what to do before, during and after meeting someone you found on a gay dating app.
Before you meet
Chat for a while first. A real conversation tells you far more than photos do, and it’s easy to notice if answers don’t add up.
- Ask for a recent photo or a voice note if something feels off.
- Keep the chat in the app until you trust him; don’t move to another platform straight away.
- Never send money, OTPs, ID documents or anything you wouldn’t want shared.
- Agree on a time and a public place, such as a busy café.
Tell someone where you’ll be
Let a friend know who you’re meeting, where and when, and agree that you’ll message them afterwards. On Zynger you can also share your live location from the chat for a set time.
During the meet
Stay somewhere public for the first meeting, arrange your own transport and keep your phone charged. If anything feels wrong, it’s fine to leave, even mid-conversation.
Red flags to take seriously
Trust your instincts. These are common warning signs on any dating app:
- He avoids simple checks like a voice note or a fresh photo, but pushes to meet at once.
- He insists on a private or isolated place for a first meet.
- He asks for money, gifts or help with an “emergency”.
- He threatens to share your photos or chats. This is a crime: stop replying, keep evidence and report it.
After the meet
Message your friend that you’re home. If someone made you feel unsafe, report him from his profile or your chat so we can act, and block him so he can’t contact you again.
