Gay dating in India: a practical guide

Updated · 6 min read · Zynger team

Gay dating in India has changed a lot in recent years, but many men still balance dating with family, work and privacy. This guide covers the basics.

The legal picture

In September 2018, the Supreme Court of India ruled in Navtej Singh Johar v. Union of India that consensual same-sex relations between adults are not a crime. Social acceptance varies by family, workplace and city, so privacy still matters to many men.

Privacy comes first

Use an app that respects that. On Zynger, screenshots are blocked on every screen, the icon can look like Notes, Weather or Calculator, and App Lock keeps the app closed to anyone else using your phone.

Watch out for scams and blackmail

Fake profiles are sometimes used to lure men to a meeting or collect private photos and then demand money. Protect yourself:

  • Meet in public first, never at an address you don’t know.
  • Be wary of anyone who rushes to meet or asks for money.
  • Don’t share photos you wouldn’t want seen outside the chat.
  • If you are threatened, stop replying, keep evidence, report the profile and contact the police or a support organisation.

Find community and support

Organisations such as the Humsafar Trust in Mumbai offer counselling and health services, and cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Ahmedabad have held Pride marches for years. See our city pages for details and sources.
